About Premier Pedigrees
Premier Pedigrees was established in 2001 by Ken Mackay as something to do in the interim having been made redundant after a successful Sales and Marketing career of 17 years working directly for multi-National oil giant BP in New Zealand.
It was established as a result of Ken’s passion for horse pedigrees right from the beginnings of school age at the end of the 1950s and the very beginning of the 1960s.
This passion included both Thoroughbred and Standardbred pedigrees equally.

In order to develop a client base, Premier Pedigrees launched an extensive and costly advertising campaign in the very early 2000s into both Australia and New Zealand.
As the saying goes, “timing is everything”, and we were immediately inundated with requests for breeding matches from Australian Standardbred breeders who were scrambling to find a new pedigree consultant to work with. The initial response was tsunami-like.
Completely unbeknown to us was the fact that the leading Australian pedigree guru Mr Gordon Campbell had made an abrupt decision to up anchor after years of dedication from him and his wife and go and retire to the Central Coast to “go fishing”.

For the early part of the first decade of the new millennium, our work was heavily concentrated around working extensively with Standardbred clients and pedigrees.
By 2008 things were beginning to swing in terms of a more enduring concentration towards Thoroughbred pedigree work spearheaded by my appointment as Pedigree Consultant at Stoneybridge Stud as the successor to Peter Jenkins who was on his way to Arrowfield Stud to work.
For six or eight weeks during our overlap, Peter was a great mentor to me at Stoneybridge Stud and taught me a lot about what to look for “back in the genes”.

The sale of Stoneybridge Stud to now what is Haunui Farm also saw me experience a year’s work at Westbury Stud where Russell Warwick also contributed to my learning from “the Master’s”.
These experiences wet my appetite for more coupled with developing an extensive racing and breeding library with every literary work being read cover to cover and some two or three times.
These include masterpieces by John Bradley ( Standardbreds ), Harold Hampton, Clive Harper, Ken McLean, Federico Tesio and many many more in the Thoroughbred world.
